JUNTOS UNIDOS

Together United

The inspiration and goal of this thesis project are to provide a facility equipped with fast options for the people of Puerto Rico who are devastated by hurricanes and left homeless and abandoned.

Hurricane Maria completely devastated the island, leaving many parts of Puerto Rico having to rebuild from the ground up. Housing has been destroyed, communication has taken months to be restored and emergency aid has been unable to access certain areas.

DEVASTATION OF HURRICANE MARIA

- Island's worst hurricane disaster on record.
- Strongest storm (Category 5) to make landfall in Puerto Rico in 85 years.
- Has further deepened the economic crisis.

PATH OF DESTRUCTION

Hurricane Maria completely swiped out the east side until it completely turned to the north-west side.

- Lost of homes
- No electricity
- No clean water / plumbing
- Sadness and Depression
- Limited resources

PROPOSAL

- Facilities in San Juan (and other locations)
- Recycling and Reusing resources
- Supplies delivered to Puerto Rico,
emptied from containers, and containers
into homes

CONCEPT 1 - PARRANDAS

Puerto Rian style of Christmas caroling - singing all throughout the night, going home to home

Self-help facility = People coming together creating their own ideas with resources that are available
Place to Place = Providing aid to other places and towns, traveling and delivering supplies and facilities

PARRANDAS

The idea of parrandas (traveling home to
home) is incorporated by providing aid and housing facilities to other areas in need - Bayamon, Santurce, Caguas, Rio Piedras, and many more.

CONCEPT 2 - EL COQUÍ

El Coqui is a small tree frog found in El Yunque Rainforest. They make a beautiful, harmonious song at night, providing joy in their song.

COLORS AND JOY

Sound analysis and the beautiful colors of Puerto Rico.
People coming together and helping one another is stronger than people working individually. Bringing joy and hope to people.

HARMONY

Bright colors will be incorporated throughout the interiors as well as the exterior, referencing the vibrant life of Puerto Rico.

SAN JUAN

San Juan is the HUB of the Caribbean allowing for easily accessible transportation and deliveries.

PORT CARIBE

The location of San Juan is the main focus of the design; however other locations have been incorporated.
Temporary supplies and housing will be supplied in these locations (Bayamon, Santurce, Rio Piedras, and Caguas).

WHY SHIPPING CONTAINERS?

Many shipping containers are delivered to Puerto Rico, filled with supplies and donations. Containers will be transformed into housing facilities. Pieces that are cutout will be reused as shading systems.

AIR FLOW

There will be many sides opened and windows for lots of air ventilation, providing cooling against the heat and humidity.

STACKING SCENARIOS

This exercise shows different stacking scenarios for the shipping containers.  Some were stacked on top, side by side, horizontal and vertical. Other scenarios were stacked in a way to create "indoor / outdoors" spaces.

WHY 2 LEVELS?

The main goal of the stacking was to not only create indoor and outdoor spaces but to also create shading. This aspect is critical due to the hot weather and strong sun.
Two level stacking was also important as Puerto Rico is known for one level housing, or in some cases two levels.

MUEBLE

Furniture

Since supplies, materials, and resources are scarce during the time of Hurricane Maria, the main objective is to recycle and reuse resources that are available. Such as coconuts reused as bowls and shading systems, old tires into tables, shipping crates into bed frames, and many more.
Below, is a "catalog" of furniture pieces that could be made from the people of Puerto Rico.

MODELOS

Models

With the simple structural system of stacking the shipping containers, a model is represented to show how the stacking looks and feels on the site.
