INTERTWINED

Hi-Rise and Bio-Architecture in D.C. & Maryland Crossing Border - Friendship Heights

The project brief contributed to the exploration of innovative architectural ideas and investigations on possible solutions to the controversial height limit of DC and to the education of the public about sustainable global issues and practices. This project was done online due to COVID-19, were we collaborated with our team member through Zoom and Miro (a digital platform to share designs and ideas).

The theme of the studio was “Where is the city”, which included architectural proposals blurring States division, Social boundaries, Geographical belonging, Urban/Suburban contexts, Natural and Built environment. The Architectural vision must be comprised by a two-part Building(s) theoretically divided by a state line (the Maryland-Wash DC border), composed by a High-rise part on the Maryland side and a lower one on the Washington DC side (restricted by the DC height limit).

Phase 1

This phase included research of precedents, digital collection of data, site analysis and exploration of the
natural evaluations, and the development of programming the two spaces: Mixed-Use Tower and Bio EXPO.

To the left, is the Infographic design was included from the research gathered. Provided are all the years about Population/Ethnosphere starting from BCE to the future.

As an overall class, the site analysis was combined to create a thorough analysis of D.C. and Maryland.

A bubble diagram was provided to demonstrate where the spaces would potentially be located. This allowed for a better understanding of how circulation, natural light, and airflow would be laid out in the spaces.

The diagram also helped to develop the idea of how the Mixed Use Tower and Expo buildings would connect, connecting D.C. and Maaaryland.

Phase 2

This phase was entirely dedicated to design strategy and Parti production. It was required to produce massing models as well as architectural drawings to illustrate proposals. During this phase, each team established a plan of work for the graphical representation of the architectural proposal.

Phase 3

This phase included Design development, production of refined models as well as architectural drawings. Design then needed to be produced in 3D and work on the experiential quality of the designs and visualization.

Phase 4

This was the final phase of refinement and completion of the Design Representation and Visuals.
